Don’t prune fire blight until winter. Pruning 6 to 12 inches (15-31 cm) into wood that is at least two years old will reduce the risk of fire blight. To get rid of the pathogen, burn every piece of tree tissue you remove.

Smaller, younger trees will be more challenging to prune deeply. If the tree is young or the trunk has been attacked by fire blight, experts advise removing the tree instead of treating it.
